P. D. Hancock Award for Bachmann Narrow Gauge

Last modified date

During the 2018 Warley National Model Railway Exhibition, we were delighted to be presented with The OO9 Society’s P. D. Hancock Award for the Bachmann Narrow Gauge OO9 scale model of the Baldwin 10-12-D Steam Locomotive. Following the launch of the Bachmann Narrow Gauge range in late-2017, we have become the first recipients of the award which recognises ‘outstanding achievement in small scale narrow gauge railway modelling’.

The Bachmann Narrow Gauge range marks Bachmann Europe’s entry into the British-outline OO9 scale Narrow Gauge market, with models of the Baldwin Class 10-12-D Steam Locomotive, Covered Goods Wagon and Open Bogie Wagon the first to be released in this evolving range. Further variants of these models are scheduled for release whilst the range will be further expanded with the addition of all-new models, such as the Quarry Hunslet Steam Locomotive and the Ashover Bogie Coach, which are currently in development.

The award was presented by Dr Charles Insley, Secretary of The OO9 Society and Geoff Bowyer, Treasurer, to Stephen Tooley, Bachmann Europe’s Research & Development Department Manager. Stephen was joined by three other members of the R&D Department, Steve Smith, David Parsons and Tom Whalley, who accepted the award on behalf of the company.

Stephen said “Bachmann have a long history of making OO scale models so the introduction of a range of Narrow Gauge OO9 scale models was an obvious development. I’m really proud of the efforts of everyone at Bachmann Europe to bring these exciting models to market and we couldn’t be happier with the reception the new range has received from our customers and consumers.”

Philip D. Hancock was a pioneer of Narrow Gauge modelling whose achievements would be recognised by The OO9 Society when he was made an Honorary Life Member. His Craig and Mertonford Railway, set in the fictitious county of Craigshire, was depicted in magazine articles and literature which brought his innovative and artistic modelling to life, inspiring many generations of modellers. Philip sadly passed away in 2011 however his models remain an inspiration to many and his legacy lives on in this award.
