A Decade of Delights from Bachmann Europe
Model Rail Magazine recently unveiled the winners of its ‘Model of the Decade’ competition and we were delighted to pick up no fewer than five top prizes making Bachmann Europe the most successful manufacturer ever in these awards! The winners from the annual Model of the Year awards between 2010 and 2019 made up the shortlist, from which Model Rail readers chose their overall favourites of the last decade. We would like to thank those who voted for our products both now, and in the Model of the Year awards in previous years.
‘OO’ Multiple Unit of the Decade
Bachmann Branchline models took a clean sweep in this category with the Midland Pullman topping the poll with a fantastic 43.9% of the vote. In second place was the 4TC produced for Kernow Model Rail Centre whilst the Derby Lightweight DMU took third.
The Midland Pullman recently underwent a facelift to create the centrepiece for our stunning Western Pullman Ultima Sound Fitted Train Set.
‘OO9’ Model of the Decade
The Baldwin 10-12-D was the first locomotive to be released in the Bachmann Narrow Gauge range and this model brushed all competition aside picking up a staggering 66.9% of the votes to take first place.

‘N’ Steam Locomotive of the Decade
The SR unrebuilt Merchant Navy lead a trio of Graham Farish models in the category with the LMS Princess Coronation Class locomotive coming a close second. In third place was the Graham Farish Castle Class released in 2017.
Models of both the Princess Coronation and the Castle Class can be found in the current Graham Farish Range.
‘N’ Coach of the Decade
Another clean sweep for Graham Farish saw the SECR Birdcage Coaches finish first, ahead of the LMS Inspection Saloon and Hawksworth Autocoach.
All three models feature in our current range of N scale coaches.
‘N’ Rolling Stock of the Decade
The fifth and final top prize for Bachmann Europe was awarded to the Graham Farish China Clay Open Wagons, produced in conjunction with Kernow Model Rail Centre.
Further versions of the China Clay Wagons have subsequently been released as part of the Graham Farish range, find these at your local Bachmann stockist.
Best of the rest
Other honours included third place in the ‘N’ Diesel Locomotive/Electric Locomotive/Multiple Unit category for the Gaham Farish model of the iconic Midland Pullman whilst the Bachmann Branchline Mk1 TPO Coach, produced in 2010 in conjunction with ModelZone, took second place in the ‘OO’ Rolling Stock category. Some ten years later this model is ever more popular and further versions are due for release shortly – more details can be found on our product pages. Closely behind the TPO in third place was the Railtrack JJA ‘Autoballaster’ wagon.
A surprise omission from this category was the Bachmann Branchline Ransomes & Rapier 45T Steam Crane. This was due to the fact that Model Rail reviewed this model in 2020 and only models reviewed by the magazine between 2010 and 2019 were entered into the competition. We look forward to seeing the Crane pitted against what else might be released over the next ten years, and we’re confident even at this early stage that this will still be a highlight for many by the end of the decade.
