Product Highlight: OO Scale NAA Propelling Control Vehicles

Last modified date

New OO Scale models of the NAA Propelling Control Vehicle were revealed as part of the EFE Rail range during our Autumn 2024 British Railway Announcements. These models are already available to purchase from Bachmann stockists, so now is the perfect chance to have a look at them in more detail!

The bodyshell of each model is highly detailed and has several individually added parts such as hand rails along the sides, whilst the cab end also features jumper cables, windscreen wipers, lamp brackets, and ETH connections. Under the solebar, there are separately fitted components including battery boxes and brake gear, which are surrounded on either side by B5 bogies that boast intricate brake and suspension detail. The cab end bogie has a speedometer and a representation of the cable connecting it to the vehicle’s solebar.

The EFE Rail PCV models were announced in a launch video produced in collaboration with Hornby Magazine.

The directional lights at the cab end feature separate modes for day and night operation, which for modellers on Analogue DC power can be set using switches within the underframe. For DCC users, the models can be fitted with a Next18 DCC Decoder (recommend Decoder item No. 36-567A) which allows the directional lighting modes to be controlled using dedicated DCC functions, whilst also allowing the use of internal cab lighting.

  • Close Coupling Mechanism
  • Accessory Pack

Two NAA Propelling Control Vehicles were created in 1993 by converting the driving vehicles from redundant Class 307 Electric Multiple Units. The passenger windows and doors along the sides of the vehicles were replaced with steel panels and roller shutter doors. The cabs also had the addition of WIPAC lights, ETH cables, brake pipes at bufferbeam level, and RCH jumper cables for the push-pull equipment that enabled the PCVs to control the locomotive at the other end of a train. The design was considered successful and a further 41 vehicles were produced into the mid-1990s. Usually placed at either end of a train comprising two General Utility Vehicles (GUVs) and a Class 47/7, the NAA Propelling Control Vehicles were used until the early 2000s when EWS lost the contract to operate Royal Mail services.
