A number of high profile new releases from Bachmann’s model railway ranges are due to arrive between now and Christmas, the first of which are already here as two new tooling projects from EFE Rail have recently landed in our warehouse and are making their way to Bachmann retailers.
Leading the way are the OO Scale Class 74 Electro-Diesels (EDs) which broke cover at the start of the year (read more about the launch of our Class 74s) and the first three models have now arrived covering Nos. E6101 (E82006), E6104 (E82007) and 74007 (E82008).
Since the first models were unveiled in prototype form, several aspects of our Class 74s have been refined to ensure that this ED is EFE Rail’s best yet, including corrections to the front bufferbeam, an improved fit and finish of the handrails and glazing, and an authentic rendition of the iconic BR Blue paint scheme, complete with full yellow ends.
These improvements only enhance the Class 74’s high level of detail, matched by an impressive technical specification. Powered by a high-quality coreless motor, drive is provided to both bogies and every axle, and electrical collection comes from every wheel. DCC provision comes by way of a 21 Pin decoder socket whilst there is space for a speaker to be fitted too.
Each Class 74 is highly detailed and there are some subtle differences across the range mimicking the variations seen on the real locomotives. Here we see Nos. 74010 (left) and 74007, the former was one of the Class 74s to be fitted with cab ventilators in the A-pillars in the 1970s and this feature is replicated on the EFE Rail model.
Cab lighting is available to both analogue and DCC users, along with illuminated blinds at each end, for which a selection of interchangeable route blinds is provided. The lighting features can be switched on/off via DCC, whilst analogue users can turn to the chassis-mounted switches to operate the cab lights, and a second switch allows the illuminated blinds to be turned off at the trailing end.
The models sport NEM coupling pockets and sprung buffers along with etched metal grilles, separate metal handrails and a full complement of cab end cables and bufferbeam pipework, some of which is supplied in the accessory pack for optional fitting, along with the loco to bogie brackets for those finishing touches.
Completing the line-up and due to arrive in early-December are Nos. 74010 (E82009) and 74009 (E82010), the latter of which boasts a weathered finish to its BR Blue paintwork, and you can order your Class 74 today from your local Bachmann retailer with prices starting at just £214.95.
Alongside the Class 74s we have also received the first of the EFE Rail OO Scale Isle of Wight Coach Packs, with the BR Crimson (E86023) and BR (SR) Green (E86024) liveried models being the first to arrive. Each pack contains four coaches that are modelled on the former LBSCR vehicles that were sent to the Isle of Wight in the late-1930s to replace older, worn-out stock.
The four models are numbered accurately to create authentic sets and are complete with set numbers on the outer ends. Each model is exquisite in its own right, but together they create a spectacle that provides a complete train in an instant – all that’s needed is a locomotive to haul it.
Two further packs will be arriving before Christmas depicting the coaches in their early years of Island life, in the Southern Railway’s Maunsell Green complete with full lining (E86021) or the brighter Malachite Green (E86022), and each four-coach pack is boxed in presentation packaging and carries a RRP of £269.95. Also arriving this December is a special twin pack for the Isle of Wight Railway, containing the two coaches of this type that are now preserved as part of the railway’s historic collection (order yours from the Isle of Wight Steam Railway).
