Product Highlight: N Scale Class 220 ‘Voyager’ DEMU

This week is the start of Bachmann’s Winter Sale, where you can save up to 50% on selected lines from across many of Bachmann’s ranges at participating Bachmann retailers. Amongst the lines included in this sale are the N Scale models of the Class 220 4-Car Diesel Electric Multiple Unit from Graham Farish, so it’s the perfect time to have a look at these models in more detail.
These Graham Farish models feature all four cars that make up the real Class 220 units, comprising two driving cars with their distinct front ends and drivers cabs, and two intermediate vehicles. Each car is modelled to realistic effect and is decorated using accurate colours and authentic fonts, typefaces and logos, whilst also featuring tinted windows.
The power cars feature separately fitted parts such as windscreen wipers and handrails around the doors, along with a non-functional representation of the Dellner coupling system that is utilised by these DEMUs. Each vehicle runs on authentically detailed bogies, replicating the inside frame design of the B5005 bogies found on the Class 220s and between these, the underframe equipment is modelled to good effect with authentic detailing and decoration. Both models also share the following features:
- Powerful 3 Pole Motor with Twin Flywheels
- Directional Lighting
- 6 pin decoder socket in each driving car – recommended Decoder Item No. 36-568A
- Accessory pack containing alternative end couplings to allow multiple sets to be coupled together
Thirty-four Class 220 Diesel Electric Multiple Units were built in the early 2000s by Bombardier Transportation. Known as ‘Voyagers’, they were designed to operate on the Cross Country route between Bristol Temple Meads and York so that they could replace the older locomotive-hauled trains that were typically operated by Class 47s and HST units being used on those lines.. All Class 220s were originally operated by Virgin CrossCountry until the route was transferred to CrossCountry in 2007. Under CrossCountry’s operation, they can be seen most commonly at Birmingham New Street but also as far as Manchester, Reading, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Aberdeen, and Penzance.
