Product Highlight: OO Scale BR 12T ‘Vanwide’ Ventilated Vans

Included in the Winter Sale are the OO Scale models of the BR 12T ‘Vanwide’ Ventilated Van from Bachmann Branchline, so this a great opportunity to find out more about these models.
These wagons feature a highly detailed body that features several separately fitted parts including the door handles, lamp irons and end chalk boards. The door runners are also separately fitted and are either smooth or ribbed as appropriate to the prototype.
Under the chassis, the wagons feature separately fitted brake shoes, vacuum equipment and turned metal buffers along with optional brake hangers and ties and different styles of axle box as appropriate.

The ‘Vanwide’ Ventilated Vans were built during the early 1960s and were designed with a wide pair of sliding doors that could be easily opened in places with limited lineside clearance to allow the wagons to be loaded and unloaded. Whilst their usage did begin to decline towards the end of the 1970s, it was a slow process as they were still used for many purposes over the next few decades, including at MOD depots as their short wheelbase allowed them to be used on tighter curves than longer wagons. The wagons were still in use until the late 2000s when they were finally withdrawn, although several survive into preservation.
