Product Highlight: OO Scale Class 40 No. D213 'Andania'

Bachmann’s Winter Sale is coming to an end, but there’s still a little bit of time left to find price reductions of up to 50% on selected lines from across many of Bachmann’s ranges at participating Bachmann retailers. Included in the Winter Sale is this OO Scale Class 40 No. D213 ‘Andania’ (32-487) from Bachmann Branchline, so this is a great opportunity to find out more about this model.

Decorated in this locomotive’s Era 9 preserved BR Green livery with Small Yellow Panels, the cab on this model features a high intensity headlight, along with handrails along the top and corner of the nose.  The inside of the cab is decorated and features a pre-fitted driver.

On the roof, the main radiator fan is visible below the finely-moulded fan grille, a Stones boiler port is fitted and the cantrail grilles are arranged appropriately for a locomotive with a Stones boiler. The accessory pack features several optional parts included etched nameplates, etched frost grilles and headcode discs.

Underneath the solebar, the buffer beam carries sprung buffers and is pre-fitted with a full set of decorated pipework and accessory parts, including multiple working equipment and air pipes for dual brakes. The model has an authentic 1Co-Co1 drive arrangement with each bogie boasting three driven axles – the bogies themselves are modelled in full-relief and have separately fitted steps and sandboxes. The model also features the following:

  • Five pole, twin shaft motor with two flywheels providing drive to both bogies
  • Separate metal bearings fitted to each driven axle, with electrical pickup from all twelve driving wheels
  • Equipped with a Plux22 DCC Decoder Socket – recommended Decoder item No. 36-570B
  • Two quality speakers employed for optimum sound reproduction, fitted to every model as standard
  • NEM coupling pockets to NEM362 standards integrated into each bogie
  • Directional lighting, including headlights and high intensity headlights, switchable on/off at either end on DCC or Analogue control
  • Cab lighting (when used on DCC), assigned to two DCC functions for separate switching of each

Class 40 No. D213 was built in 1959 at the English Electric Vulcan Foundry Works at Newton-Le-Willows in Lancashire. It was given the name ‘Andania’ a few years later in 1962 and was renumbered to 40013 in 1974 when TOPS was introduced. During its lifetime, the locomotive was allocated to several sheds across the country and was used for a variety of purposes, including hauling the Royal Train, until it was withdrawn in the mid 1980s and preserved later that decade. No. D213 has since been returned to mainline use.
