Product Highlight: OO Scale LSWR 10 Ton Vans
The EFE Rail range has had several newly tooled releases in 2023, including the wagons that are the subject of this Product Highlight: OO scale models of the the LSWR 10 Ton Van.
These vans were built by the London & South Western Railway between 1885 and 1922. They were built with outside frames, with other aspects of their design evolving several times during the period that they were being produced, resulting in many similar but recognisable wagons with different heights, width, roofs, doors, chassis, buffers, axle boxes and brakes. The wagons had a long working life, with many still being used when the railways were Nationalised in 1948.
These new EFE models have been designed to portray many of the different combinations of features that could be found on the full-sized wagons, with six different models of vans built to Diagrams 1410, 1406 and 1408 available with various authentic liveries. The models all feature NEM coupling sockets.
E87051 – LSWR 10 Ton Ventilated Van LSWR Brown
Our first 10 Ton Van model is E87051, which is a ventilated van in the LSWR Brown livery from Era 2. The van carries the number 11111. This wagon is a Diagram 1410 van with Morton Clutch brakes, Panter axle boxes and plain tapered buffers.
E87052 – S&DJR 10 Ton Covered Van S&DJR Grey
Our next wagon is E87052, which is a Covered Van in S&DJR Grey from Era 2. This van carries the number 1213. Whilst also a Diagram 1410 van, it was built for use by the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway and had single sided brakes and no ventilators on the ends.
E87053 – LSWR 10 Ton Ventilated Van SR Brown (Early)
Our third van E87053 is another ventilated van, but in the Southern Railway’s early Brown Livery with large lettering from Era 3. This wagon is number 42679, and is a Diagram 1410 van equipped with Freighter brakes, Warner axle boxes and plain tapered buffers.
E87054 – LSWR 10 Ton Ventilated Van SR Brown (Late)
The next wagon is E87054, which depicts a ventilated van in the SR’s later Brown livery with small lettering. Numbered 42232, this wagon is a Diagram 1406 van and is taller than the previous models. It has Lift Link brakes, Panter axle boxes and plain tapered buffers.
E87055 – LSWR 10 Ton Ventilated Van BR Grey
The penultimate van is E87055, which is another Diagram 1406 ventilated van in British Railways’ Grey livery. This wagon carries the number S43405, and is equipped with Lift Link brakes, Panter axle boxes and plain tapered buffers.
E87056 – LSWR 10 Ton Ventilated Van SR Brown (Early)
Our final wagon is E87056, which is a ventilated van in the early SR Brown livery. This wagon is number 44366 and is Diagram 1408 van, which was wider than the other diagrams with a flush roof and hinged doors. This wagon has Lift Link brakes, Panter axle boxes, fabricated buffers and three-hole disc wheels.
