Product Highlight: OO Scale LSWR Adams O2
EFE Rail have recently welcomed back a popular locomotive to their range of OO Scale models – the LSWR Adams O2. These were revealed a few weeks ago in our Summer 2024 British Railway Announcements and are already available to purchase from retailers, so now is a great time to take a look in more detail.
These locomotives retain the high level of detail from the previous releases, with intricate handrails, pipework and interior cab details evident throughout the model. However, the tooling used to produce these new models has been expanded to allow for new variations with features not seen on previous releases, such as open coal rails, and extended coal bunkers.
For those looking for more technical features such as DCC and Sound, the locomotives feature a decoder socket inside the smokebox that can be easily accessed via the magnetic smokebox door, whilst there is space to fit a speaker inside the coal bunker and cab. The locomotives also share the following features:
- Powerful Coreless Motor
- Equipped with a 6 Pin DCC Decoder Socket – recommended Decoder item no. 36-568A
- NEM Coupling Pockets
- Accessory Pack comprising bufferbeam pipework, route Indicator discs and etched loco tools
The O2 Class was designed in 1888 for the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) by William Adams, and 60 locomotives were built between 1889 and 1896. The locomotives proved successful and were used throughout the whole of the LSWR’s network. After the LSWR was grouped into the Southern Railway, several locomotives were transferred to the Isle of Wight where their light weight and short wheelbase made them ideal to work the island’s lines, and many of the locomotives were upgraded to have extended bunkers with a larger capacity for coal. Withdrawal of the O2s started in the 1930s but many survived into BR ownership, with the final locomotive being withdrawn in the mid 1960s.
