Product Highlight: OO Scale LMS Fowler 3F ‘Jinty’

Last modified date

The LMS Fowler 3F ‘Jinty’ was a prominent locomotive for both the London, Midland and Scottish Railway and British Railways, so it should be no surprise that this popular locomotive is also an essential part of the Bachmann Branchline range of OO scale models. New models of this locomotive are making their way to retailers’ shelves as we speak, so now is the perfect time to have a closer look!

These models feature a diecast running plate, which supports a high-fidelity bodyshell made up of many details including the sandboxes and sandpipes. There are several separately fitted detail parts applied to the bodyshell, such as the handrails, lamp irons, vacuum pipes, and the safety valves which are reproduced as metal components.

The interior of the cab features a full depiction of the boiler back-head, whilst the buffer beam is equipped with sprung buffers. Underneath the running board, the attention to detail continues with the modelling of the brake blocks and brake rigging. These ‘Jinties’ also share the following features:

  • NEM Coupling Pockets
  • Powerful 3 Pole Motor
  • Equipped with a Next18 DCC Decoder Socket – Recommend Decoder item No. 36-567A

All models are also available with SOUND FITTED and these have an ESU LokSound Micro V5 DCC Sound Decoder that has been programmed with a Bachmann-exclusive sound project that contains over 20 sound functions using recordings from real locomotives. The SOUND FITTED models may also be used on most Analogue (DC) layouts with suitable controllers, where they will play normal load running sounds, acceleration steam chuff sounds and many other automatic or randomised sounds.

The Fowler 3F was designed by Henry Fowler for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in the early 1920s, and over 400 were built between 1924 and 1931. The design was based on the Midland Railway’s 2441 Class, but with a Belpaire firebox and improvements to the cab. Given the nickname ‘Jinties’, the class proved to be incredibly versatile and could be found shunting in yards as well as on goods and passenger trains even after the big four were amalgamated into British Railways. However, BR’s move to diesel powered locomotives led to the entire class being withdrawn by 1967, although several locomotives survived into preservation.

These new Jinty models share the SOUND FITTED functionality that was introduced on our previous releases.
