Product Highlight: OO Scale Windhoff MPVs

Bachmann’s Winter Sale lasts until the end of the year and during that time, you’ll be able to find price reductions of up to 50% on selected lines from across many of Bachmann’s ranges at participating Bachmann retailers. Included in the Winter Sale are some of the OO Scale models of the Windhoff Multi Purpose Vehicles (MPVs) from Bachmann Branchline, so this is a great opportunity to find out more about them.

The real MPVs were built for Railtrack to use during the maintenance of railway infrastructure and have a modular design that allows them to be configured for any requirement. Our models have been produced with a full set of seven modules, most of which can be removed so that your MPV can be configured to whatever arrangement you wish.

The cabs on these models are highly detailed and decorated with numerous processes and an array of separately fitted parts such as windscreen wipers, handrails and rear canopies, along with a pre-fitted driver in the cab of the powered vehicle. The exterior of the model features a high level of decoration too, along with separately fitted guardrails where appropriate. Under the solebar, both vehicles have full relief bogies whilst the power car features decorated engine moulding and underframe equipment. Both MPVs also share the following features:

  • Accessory Pack
  • NEM Coupling Pockets
  • Powerful 3 Pole Motor with Flywheel
  • Directional Lighting
  • Ready to Accept a Speaker
  • Equipped with a 21 Pin DCC Decoder Socket – recommended Decoder item No. 36-557A

The SOUND FITTED versions of these models are equipped with an ESU Loksound V5 DCC Sound Decoder, which has been programmed using a custom sound project that features 30 different functions. The sound project also provides the option to select alternative brake, horn and coupling sounds by altering CV values.

The SOUND FITTED models are also suitable for use on layouts that are operated with analogue (DC) control. When used on analogue layouts, the models will play normal load running sounds as well as other other automatic or randomised sounds when power is applied.

Railtrack ordered twenty-five Multi Purpose Vehicles during the late 1990s, with another 7 being ordered in the early 2000s. The vehicles were built by Windhoff in Germany and are based on vehicles that were already in use there. Each vehicle is designed with a cab and a flat bed which is intended to carry a combination on modules that can be switched out depending on requirements. The MPVs are still in use and are now operated by Network Rail.
