Product Highlight: O Scale Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0 Tank Locomotives

Last modified date

EFE Rail have recently welcomed their first O Scale steam locomotive models to the range, the Hudswell Clarke 0‑6‑0 Tank Engine. Originally developed by Australian manufacturer Ixion Model Railways, these locomotives were voted as Model of the Year by readers of Model Rail Magazine and RMweb shortly after their release. Since Ixion now focus primarily on models based on Australian prototypes, EFE Rail were happy to take the opportunity to partner with them so that these locomotives could return.

Each model boasts a highly detailed bodyshell and features several separately fitted components such as handrails, lamp irons, whistles and safety valves. The inside of the cab along with the controls and dials are fully decorated. The locomotives are unnamed and unnumbered, but each model comes with a selection of unpainted etched name, number and works plates, allowing a choice of identities.

Under the solebar, the model is equipped with finescale wheels and a sprung rear wheelset. The buffer beam features sprung metal buffers and a sprung drawgear which is fitted with three-link couplings. These details can be supplemented using the set of optional tools supplied with each model, which includes shovels, picks, rakes, prickers, a bucket and oil cans. The new EFE Rail releases also share the following features:

  • Powerful 5 Pole Motor
  • Locomotive Ready to Accept a Speaker
  • Equipped with an 8 Pin DCC Decoder Socket – recommended Decoder item No. 36‑566A

Hudswell Clark first started producing 0-6-0 tank engines in Leeds in 1888, with many tweaks to the design over the years. These models depict the types of locomotives that were constructed during the 1920s and 1930s. The locomotives were popular for use with private owners such as contractors and industrial facilities, and multiple examples have survived into preservation.
