T28 The American tank that never went to war!

Originally designed as a heavy assault gun and known as the T95 Gun Motor Carriage, the 85-ton monster was to have been the American army’s answer to the last and toughest of all Germany’s defences – the Siegfried Line.

But the war in Europe was over long before the T28 Heavy Tank, as it had then become, was ready for action.

The first, and only, example of this mighty machine was demonstrated in the autumn of 1946, and it amazed everyone with its enormous size and power. Its long 105 mm gun was mounted in the hull itself, protected by armour plating one foot thick!

Having been specifically built to batter its way into the heart of Nazi Germany, it was now out of a job – its very size, thought so necessary during the war, now proved its undoing.

It was much too expensive and specialised a vehicle for a peacetime army, and further construction plans were abandoned soon after the prototype first began its trials. [Source: LION, 11/62]

Takom has issued three boxings.

PKTAK02209 T28 Super Heavy Tank (Gun Motor Carriage T95) represents the completed prototype as demonstrated at Aberdeen Proving Ground in the state of Maryland, USA, between 1946 and 1948.
The prototype is preserved in Georgia, USA, at the US Army Armor & Cavalry Collection.

PKTAK02210 ‘M28A1/A2 Super Assault Tank’ imagines how the giant vehicle may have appeared in postwar battles and four US army markings are provided.

The carton-box PKTAK02209W combines one each T28 & M28A1/A2 plus an exclusive 136-page modelling guidebook which includes historical references, walk-around photos of the surviving prototype at the Patton Museum in Fort Knox, removal and reassembly of the outer tracks, relocation to Fort Benning, and walk-around photos after restoration at Fort Benning. An invaluable modelling resource! Takom only produced enough T28 kits and books to cover distributor preorders, and the factory has now sold out. Once our stock is gone, it’s gone!

Also Available: WWI Mk IV tank PKTAK02076 which has been reissued with limited availability!
