Product Highlight: N Scale LMS 10000 and 10001 ‘Twins’

N Scale models of the first mainline diesel locomotives built in the UK, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway’s ‘Twins’, Nos. 10000 and 10001, made their way to the Graham Farish range last year and proved to be a popular success that were even crowned Model of the Year by Model Rail Magazine. Since then, new liveries have been announced encompassing the operational careers of this pioneering pair, so now is the perfect time to take another look at these masterpieces in miniature.
Despite their small size, an impressive amount of detail is crammed into these models, with lamp irons, headcode discs and connecting doors being present on the cab ends. Along with the handrails, grilles and windows along each side, every variation of No. 10001 has the prototypical body side steps whilst the various incarnations of No. 10000 have smooth sides. The exterior of the model features directional lighting that can be configured to either passenger or freight mode by using either DCC control or switches on the chassis.
Full attention has been paid to the model’s interior too, with detailed cab and engine room compartments that are visible through the windows of the model. When used on DCC, the lights inside the leading cab can be switched on. Under the solebar, the chassis block is made of diecast metal and is equipped with several underframe components that have been separately applied, along with bogies that feature details in full relief and are equipped with separately fitted metal sand pipes and removable NEM coupling pockets. The models also all share the following features:
- Coreless, twin shaft motor with two flywheels providing drive to both bogies
- All axle drive, with separate metal bearings fitted to each axle and Electrical pickup from all wheels
- Equipped with a Next18 DCC Decoder Socket – Recommend Decoder item No. 36-567A
- Removable coupling pockets to NEM355 standards fitted to each bogie
- Each model supplied with a full set of model-specific bufferbeam pipework and accessory parts
There are also SOUND FITTED versions of each model, each of which is fitted with a Zimo MS590N18 DCC Sound Decoder that has been pre-programmed with an exclusive sound project containing over 25 functions. The SOUND FITTED locomotives may also be used on most Analogue (DC) layouts, where they will play normal load running sounds as well as other automatic or randomised sounds when power is applied.
The real locomotives were built in the 1940s as a joint venture between the LMS who designed the body and chassis, and English Electric who provided the engines and electrical gear. The locomotives originally hauled passenger trains on the Midland Mainline and West Coast Mainline, both individually and together.
They were allocated to the Southern Region for trials in the early 1950s, before returning to the Midland Region where they ventured as far north as Scotland and were used on both passenger and freight workings. No. 10000 was the first to be withdrawn in 1963, whilst No. 10001 survived for a few more years until 1966.
