Product Preview | EFE Rail Class 74s

Last modified date

At the start of the year we revealed a new and exciting project for our EFE Rail range – the Class 74 Electro-Diesel. Never before has this prototype been produced as a mainstream ready to run OO Scale model and so our new model has really caught the imagination of Bachmann enthusiasts worldwide. We launched the project with Engineering Prototypes showing the work that had been completed to that point, but one obvious area which still needed attention was the bufferbeam.

The Class 74s were rebuilt from Class 71s and whilst the ’71s has a prominent valance on the bottom of their bufferbeams, these were removed during the rebuild, however this feature had been included on the first samples for the EFE Rail model in error.

The good news is that tooling modifications have now been completed and we hope you will agree, refining this area has taken our Class 74 to another level. We’ve posed an early bodyshell on the new chassis for this photo, but the bodyshell has also been refined with the handrail locating holes reduced in size and the fit and finish of the glazing improved. You can also expect an accurate rendition of the BR Blue livery on the finished models!

With these final tweaks completed, production of the EFE Rail Class 74s is now underway and delivery is expected before the end of 2025. Five models will be available at launch and these carry a RRP of £214.95 each (£224.95 for the weathered model – E82010).

Production quantities have now been fixed so if you want to guarantee your Class 74, contact your local Bachmann retailer to place a pre-order ready for their arrival later in the year!
