LNER G5 0-4-4T Announcement

Last modified date

Bachmann Europe are delighted to be able to share the news that we have been commissioned by The Model Centre (TMC) to produce a Branchline OO scale model of the LNER Class G5 0-4-4T steam locomotive. The news was shared following the opening of Model Rail Scotland today. Whilst we have previously produced new rolling stock exclusively for TMC, this will be the first newly tooled locomotive.

110 of these locomotives were built between 1894 and 1901 for the North Eastern Railway. Designed by Wilson Worsdell, the NER originally designated them as Class Os, before later being reclassified as G5s by the LNER. For the majority of their life, they served as passenger locomotives, however, they could also be found working on branch freight trains and station pilot duties. From the 1930s, a number of the Class were transferred to other parts of the UK such as Stratford, Cambridge, Aberdeen and Keith.

In June 1948 the first locomotive was withdrawn from operation, but it was several years until this process picked up pace as DMUs took over many of the G5’s traditional duties. A few locomotives managed to gain a Late Crest and at the start of December 1958 only 11 were still left in service, with the last being withdrawn at the end of that month. Unfortunately, none of the class was preserved but The Class G5 Locomotive Company Limited is well advanced with a new build locomotive.

We will be producing 10 models of the G5 for TMC, with each model having details differences such as different boilers, bunkers, smoke-boxes, smoke-box doors, whistle positions and safety valves amongst other details. Each model will also have a Next18 decoder interface, pre-fitted speaker and LED fire-box flicker effect. £10 from each sale of item No. 35-251Z (No. 1759 in NER Lined Green livery) will be donated to The Class G5 Locomotive Company Limited. This model portrays the new-build locomotive currently under construction and the donations will help towards the completion of the project.

The OO scale model is currently in the detailed researched stage, with more information to be announced closer to the release date. The models to be produced are as follows:
