Product Highlight: Teddy Bears Picnic

You may be sure of a big surprise if you go down to the woods today, but if you are looking for Teddy Bears then the Graham Farish range is a better place to start. Of course, when we say “Teddy Bears”, we mean N Scale models of the British Railways Class 14 Diesel-Hydraulic Shunter.

The bodyshells on these models are highly detailed, with finely moulded grilles and handles along with separately fitted handrails, lamps and other small parts. The ends of all three models feature wasp stripes in colours that are appropriate for the livery. There are footsteps on both sides on the running plate, and a choice of buffer beam configurations that allow the model to be ran with either standard NEM couplings or with a full-depth buffer beam and a full set of pipes. The models also share the following features:

  • Accessory Pack
  • NEM Coupling Pockets
  • Powerful Coreless Motor
  • Speaker Fitted
  • Equipped with a Next18 DCC Decoder Socket – Recommended Decoder item No. 36-567A
372-950A Class 14 D9522 BR Green (Wasp Stripes) Side View
372-954 Class 14 D29531 NCB British Oak Orange & Black Side View
372-955 Class 14 D9523 BR Maroon (Wasp Stripes) Side View

There are also SOUND FITTED versions of each model available. These versions are fitted with a Zimo MS590N18 Sound Decoder that has been pre-programmed with an exclusive sound project containing over 25 functions.

The SOUND FITTED locomotives may also be used on most Analogue (DC) layouts, where they will play Basic Prime Mover (engine) sounds which vary with speed, as well as many other automated sounds when power is applied.

Over 50 Class 14 locomotives were built by British Railways in the 1960s for use in local yards, on short-distance freight trains and for shunting. They became known as “Teddy Bears” after George Cole, who was the foreman of Swindon Works where the locomotives were built, said “We’ve built The Great Bear, now we’re going to build a Teddy Bear!”. The locomotives were not used by BR for long, with many sold into industrial use in the early years of the 1970s where they continued to have longer working lives.
